Transforming Supply Chains and Manufacturing

50% of U.S. aerospace manufacturers are in California; 80% of these companies have less than 100 employees. As prime contractors focus on system integration core competency, suppliers have needed to develop additional capabilities, become involved earlier in the product development process, and often share risk, cost, mission assurance, innovation development and accountability. This panel will examine and discuss transformational changes in advanced manufacturing and the dynamic global supplier network from the system integrator, supplier network, workforce development and economic development perspectives. This session will also include summarized interim results of the U.S. Department of Labor WIRED (Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development) Supplier and Manufacturing Initiatives.

Educating the Workforce of the Future

As the Baby Boomer generation, which was inspired by the nation's efforts that resulted in landing on the Moon, become eligible to retire, there is a projected lack of engineers and scientists to replace them. Many nations, including China and Japan, are graduating several times the number of engineers that are graduating in the United States. What can be done to ensure the future space workforce will be available when needed to continue this nation's space exploration activities and to ensure access to space? This panel will focus on ongoing efforts and future plans to educate and train the space workforce of the future.
