City of Santa Clara
Proclamation

WHEREAS, California is the world's center for the design and manufacture of satellites and other space hardware that contribute to scientific exploration, including support of the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Program, weather prediction, communication, entertainment, and national security by virtue of the fact that the state boasts "end-to-end" capabilities, including research, design and development, manufacturing, launch, on-orbit operations and space-based services; and

WHEREAS, California hosts more NASA centers than any other state, including Ames Research Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Dryden Flight Research Center, which, when coupled with California's institutes of higher education, have produced engineers and skilled workers with the intellectual capacity and innovation capable of fostering new and expanded growth areas for California's space legacy and greater economy; and

WHEREAS, California employs approximately 180,000 people in space enterprise activities and our community has long benefited from the jobs and economic growth that has occurred due to the prosperous space enterprise climate; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the jobs and revenues created by space enterprise in our region, we recognize that we host impressive educational facilities, faculties, technical education and training programs all poised to assume a vigorous proactive role in promoting and addressing space enterprise needs throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clara does hereby declare and urge Governor Gray Davis and the California State Legislature to acknowledge the date of March 18, 2003, as "California Space Day"; and

WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clara promotes and supports the development of space enterprise consistent with prudent environmental sensitivity and minimal regulation, designed to retain California's historic position as a world leader in space education, research and development, manufacturing, services and transportation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, PATRICIA M. MAHAN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor, and on behalf of the entire City Council, commend the California Space Authority for its efforts to foster and maintain space enterprise in our community and throughout the State of California.

Given under my hand and the Seal of the City of Santa Clara, California, this 18th day of February, 2003.

PATRICIA M. MAHAN ss MAYOR
