Mayoral Proclamation

CITY OF SUNNYVALE

IWHEREAS, California is the world's center for the design and manufacturing of space craft, launch vehicles, satellites, and other space hardware contributing to scientific exploration, including support for the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Program; and

WHEREAS, California has hosted many space firsts, including the world's first polar-orbiting satellite launch at Vandenberg Air Force Base, as well as the breaking of the sound barrier by Chuck Yeager at Edwards Air Force Base; and

WHEREAS, California hosts more NASA centers than any other state in the U.S., including Ames Research Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Dryden Flight Research Center; and

WHEREAS, California's Aerospace Industry is playing a vital role in the development of technologies that will support our national Homeland Defense strategy; and

WHEREAS, The California Space Authority will be sponsoring a "Space Week" in Washington, D.C., from March 24 through March 27, to promote the importance of space enterprise,

THEREFORE, I, Julia E. Miller, Mayor, on behalf of the Sunnyvale City Council, do hereby proclaim March 24 through March 27, 2003 as

CALIFORNIA "SPACE WEEK"
