SACRAMENTO --- Honoring the multitude of contributions made by the space and satellite industry, Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) is authoring a resolution to recognize their vital contributions by creating California Space Day.

“This resolution provides much needed recognition of California’s space enterprise community.  One of the primary reasons for this resolution is that recognition of this important industry could assist in capturing a greater portion in the years to come,” said Senator George Runner.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 14 would acknowledge April 12, 2005 as California Space Day in recognition of the satellite industry as an important economic and job creation engine.  The satellite industry has been the largest and fastest growing segment of the overall space industry, having tripled in size from over $15 billion in 1996 to over $49 billion in 2002, according to a recent statistics study of the Satellite Industries Association.

California’s share of this global market is approximately 20 percent, and it is forecasted to be over 30 percent by 2010.

Runner continued, “It’s important to highlight this industry’s many important contributions to our economy.  For example, satellite technology is also a partner with many other key California industries such as information technology, telecommunications, entertainment, environment studies, and agricultural management.”

SCR 14 passed the State Senate unanimously and now moves to the State Assembly for their consideration.
