Friday Nov 4th NASA Dryden Flight Research Center's Laurie Grindle to Lecture at Nat'l Air & Space Museum 8 PM
Faster Than a Speeding Bullet - A Glimpse into the Historic X-43A Scramjet Flight Test Project
After 40 years of scramjet research, NASA and its industry partners successfully conducted two revolutionary flights in 2004 at Mach 7 and Mach 10, respectively, demonstrating that airframe-integrated scramjets are a viable option for future atmospheric and spaceflight applications. (A scramjet is an experimental jet engine that does not require a turbine.) Laurie Grindle, chief engineer for the 3rd flight of the hypersonic X-43A and currently assigned to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, in California, discusses this cutting-edge project. Lecture is at 8:00 p.m. Friday November 4th National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Dulles Virginia. Admission is free, but tickets are required and available at the museum's IMAX Theater Box office, on the museum's Web site, or by phone at 202-633-2398. http://www.si.edu/events/lectures.asp
X-43A Hypersonic Program Wins NASA Administrator's Top Award
NASA's Turning Goals into Reality program has recognized the Hyper-X Program Team with its highest aeronautical honor, the Administrators Award, for exceptional progress toward making scramjet-powered hypersonic flight a reality. The award honored NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif., Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va., and the industry partners on the Hyper-X / X-43A hypersonic program. The X-43A demonstrated supersonic-combustion ramjet (scramjet) propulsion through two record-setting flights in 2004. Both flights demonstrated sustained thrust from the X-43A's air-breathing scramjet engine, the first at nearly 5,000 mph, the second at nearly 7,000 mph, or almost 10 times the speed of sound. NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Aircraft, Exhibits at Edwards AFB Open House
Thousands of airshow fans were on hand for the 2005 Edwards Air Force Base open house and air show Oct. 22-23. Above, NASA's now-retired NB-52B air-launch "mothership" and modified B747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft were popular flightline displays.

Neil Armstrong Recalls Test Pilot Days
Neil Armstrong delivered his remarks at the 2005 SETP symposium in Anaheim, Calif., in a comfortable story-teller's way that held the audience's attention. It was a delightful excursion back in time with the man who flew NACA and NASA research aircraft as diverse as a B-29, B-47, P-51, F-100, and the X-15 long before he stepped onto the moon and into history.

Event will highlight the Early Career of NACA / NASA Research Pilot Neil Armstrong
The Antelope Valley Board of Trade, in partnership with NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, will be presenting "Above the High Desert: Local Stories from the Career of Neil Armstrong" on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. at the Essex House Hotel & Convention Center in Lancaster California. The event will be emceed by Dr. James R. Hansen, author of the newly released book First Man: The Life of Neil Armstrong. The evening will conclude with a booksigning. For more information call the Board of Trade office (661) 942-9581.
Hold the Date: December 1-2, California Space Authority Conference: "Transforming Space", Los Angeles.
"Transforming Space: Innovation, Infrastructure and Intellectual Capital" is a two-day conference hosted by the California Space Authority (CSA) and the California Space Education and Workforce Institute (CSEWI). NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Director Kevin Petersen will be part of a panel presentation on Friday morning Dec 2. Representatives Jane Harman and Ken Calvert will give opening remarks on December 1st and 2nd, respectively. The Governor of California is the invited to be the Friday evening keynote speaker.
