The California Space Authority (CSA) and the Maryland Space Business Roundtable (MSBR), in their first collaborative effort, co-hosted a Space Science Roundtable in order to highlight the importance of space science. The Roundtable, which was held on Capitol Hill on May 11, attracted more than 45 individuals including Congressional staff, industry representatives and non-profit organizations.
Congressional staff in attendance represented Rep. Adam Schiff (CA), Rep. Steny Hoyer (MD), Rep. Loretta Sanchez (CA), Rep. Earl Pomeroy (ND), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA), Rep. Steve Pearce (NM), the Science and Technology Committee and the Committee on Education and Workforce.
Keynote presentations during the Roundtable were made by Dr. Colleen Hartman, NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Science; Dr. Matt Mountain, Director, Space Telescope Science Institute; and Dave Jones, Storm Center CEO.
"California and Maryland are like biceps of the nation," Jones stated. "They lift the nation with regard to space science."
All three presenters focused upon current progress being made in space science such as recent discoveries of the Hubble, Spitzer and Chondra space telescopes.
"There is a scientific renaissance now underway," Mountain proclaimed. Hartman stated that NASA currently has 93 spacecraft now being developed or already in space. She added that NASA will launch 11 earth science instruments in the next 8 years.
