California Space Week Washington DC, 2005
CSA and 28 of its members educated public officials on six issues March 15 through 17 during the 7th annual California Space Week in Washington, D.C. The week included meetings in all 55 California Congressional offices as well as presentations by both executive branch officials and Congressional committee staff. A highlight of the week was a joint Capitol Hill reception with the Florida Space Authority on March 16, which included as attendees Rep. Ken Calvert (CA), Chairman of the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee and Rep. Dave Weldon (FL), Vice-Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee.
The six issues discussed during the Congressional meetings were: (1) the Economic Impact of NASA on California’s economy, (2) Base Realignment and Closure, (3) Streamlining Export Licenses at the U.S. State Department, (4) Revitalize and Create Space Enterprise Workforce, (5) Satellite Applications to Homeland Security Problems, and (6) Space-Related Taxation. The six point papers on these issues can be found online at (provide link).
Representatives from both the California (Melissa Decker) and Florida (Frank Bonner) governors’ offices welcomed the group at the Hall of States on March 17. Then federal executive branch officials representing the White House’s National Security Council (Gil Klinger), the State Department (Ann Ganzer), the Air Force (Pete Solie), FAA (Patti Grace Smith), and NASA (John Mankins) made individual presentations. Presentations were also made by David Goldston, Chief of Staff, House Science Committee, and Jean Toal Eisen, professional staff, Senate Commerce Committee.
Prior to the official beginning of CA Space Week, Janice Dunn, CSA Director of Federal Government Relations, made a presentation regarding the week to the Coalition for Space Exploration. Copies of the six point papers were distributed during the meeting:
