SPADS Parallels Pioneering Effort of SpaceShipOne

A doppler radar was "watching" the SS1 flight out of the Mojave Spaceport, and gathering remarkably new and large amounts of data on the flight of the crafts. This was the culmination of a California Space Infrastructure Program (CSIP) project demonstration known as SPADS, Spaceport Arrival and Departure Safety System.

NASA RFI: Commercial Space Transportation Services, Due Oct 15

"This RFI, issued by NASA's Office of Space Operations, is to obtain information regarding capabilities and market interest from existing and emerging domestic commercial space transportation providers. NASA will use this information to shape agency acquisition strategy for space transportation services."

$1,000 ASA Scholarships Available

College scholarships in the amount of $1,000 are available through the Aerospace States Association. Applications are due no later than December 1. Applicants must be in their sophomore or junior years of college and have majors in science, engineering, computer science or technology. Watch the CSA web site for details.

U.S. Navy Awards Lockheed Martin Team $2 Billion Contract to Build Mobile User Objective System (MUOS)

A team led by Lockheed Martin has won the competition to build the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), a next-generation narrowband tactical satellite communications system that will provide significantly improved and assure communications for the mobile warfighter.

SpaceX Selected for Responsive Space Launch Demonstration

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) has been awarded $8M by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and U.S. Air Force to demonstrate highly responsive, affordable launch capability.

CSIP FY06 Submittal Package Available; Deadline Oct 29

The nominations period for California Space Infrastructure Program (CSIP) projects has begun for the FY06 cycle. The deadline is October 29. Please submit a notice of intent ASAP.

PanAmSat selects Sea Launch for Galaxy 16 Mission

The agreement provides for Sea Launch to lift the 4700-kg spacecraft to geosynchronous transfer orbit in 2006:
