The funds received bipartisan support as members of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on State Administration rallied behind the AssemblymanТs motion. УOur current funding level is just not enough to get the job done,Ф said Nakano. OMS, formerly known as the Office of Military Base Retention and Reuse, coordinates all of the State's efforts to protect military installations from the Federal Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process expected to take place next year. Currently, the Office is budgeted at the same level as last year, $180,000. УWe strongly support full-funding for the Office of Military Support. California must step up our efforts to protect our bases, which play a vital role in our nationТs security,Ф said Redondo Beach City Councilmember John Parsons, Co-chair of Los Angeles Air Force Base Regional Alliance. Aware of what other states are spending to protect their bases, Nakano sent a letter to Governor Schwarzenegger last week asking that he include funding for the office in the May Revision of the Budget. When the Governor declined to act on the request, Nakano decided to move on his own. Recently, Texas passed a $250 million bond issue to improve infrastructures around their base, and Georgia is spending $6 million, Ohio $2.5 million, and Oklahoma $1.5 million on protection efforts. In the South Bay, the Los Angeles Air Force Base supports more than 65,000 jobs between military personnel and employees at aerospace contractors. It accounts for more than $3.3 billion in payroll. The OMS funding will now go to the Budget Conference Committee, which consists of both Assemblymembers and Senators. If the Conference Committee approves the request, it could be included as part of the State Budget adopted by the Legislature later this summer.
