California Space Week Washington DC

California Space Day Sacramento

This March, CSA will hold once again its annual Washington, DC event to educate federal officials about the space enterprise needs in California. Under discussion will be issues related to military base retention, homeland security, tax policy, workforce, science and math education, and export controls.

By scheduling a series of legislative appointments, CSA connects its members with federal elected officials and others that are important to the future of space enterprise in California.

California Space Week Washington DC begins Tuesday, March 16, 2004 with a coffee reception and orientation at 8:30 a.m. on Capitol Hill. Scheduled meetings with Congressional members and staff follow and will continue through Wednesday, March 17. CSA will host a reception in the Rayburn House Office Building, Space Subcommittee Room 2325, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 17. Members of the California Congressional delegation and their staff will be invited to join us for this networking opportunity. CSA will meet with executive branch officials from agencies such as the U.S. Departments of Defense, State, Transportation, Commerce, and NASA on Thursday, March 18.

CSA Working with Policymakers and Communities to Protect Military
Space Assets

Golden State Museum Exhibit

Since Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's State of the State Address, he has pointed his Administration toward support of military bases and the retention of important missions within California. Not only are State legislative hearings being conducted to obtain a full understanding of the impact to the State's economy from the 2005 base realignment ("BRAC") round, but efforts are underway to prove military value of California-based missions. The California Office of Military Base Retention and Reuse (OMBRR) is led by Director James Spagnole and Major General (Ret.) William Jefferds, Special Advisor. OMBRR is coordinating the BRAC Statewide Working Group consisting of community military base support organizations such as the Los Angeles Air Force Base Alliance.

California's Congressional Delegation has united to protect California's interests with staunch support from Senator Dianne Feinstein, who has stated,"I will be with you every step of the way."

California Space Authority (CSA) Executive Director Andrea Seastrand expressed that bi-partisan statewide support is strong and focused for 2005 military base retention,"CSA is pleased to be part of such a powerful statewide coalition and we are committed to assisting communities in protecting their space assets."

This exhibit at the Golden State Museum will show visitors the degree to which satellite services impact their everyday lives. Agricultural management, environmental knowledge, communication links, entertainment delivery, and national security protection are just a few areas in which satellite technology impacts the lives of ordinary people. California is rich in space enterprise history and this exhibit helps to show the importance of commercial space applications and their economic impact to the state.

Space Services Fair

The fair will bring physical examples from the museum exhibit to the North Steps of the Capitol Building. Companies will be given booth space to showcase their space-based service technologies. Participants will be asked to demonstrate live use of satellites to show how space services are in use every day to improve lives. Legislators, government staff members and the general public will have a first-hand account of space technology in everyday use.
