On Friday, September 29, 2006 the California Space Authority hosted its third Community Support Meeting for the California Space Center project. Hosted by the City of Pismo Beach at their Council Chambers, the meeting was well attended by over 60 community-minded and interested people. Presenters detailed the California Space Center plans, highlighting usage concept, environmental review, purpose, cultural assets, capital campaign efforts, business and marketing strategies, partner involvement, and economic impacts.
The purpose of these Community Support Meetings is to bring awareness to the surrounding communities along California's central coast that could find direct benefit from the California Space Center's future existence. These meetings provide the public with a forum to discover more about the project and gain answers on how it will positively affect the local community and State of California through economic development, educational opportunities, enhanced cultural and environmental appreciation, tourism advantages, entertainment possibilities, and industry support.
Special to this Community Support Meeting was the commitment of a Letter of Support from the Central Coast Tourism Council and their Board of Directors. The Central Coast Tourism Council (CCTC) is a regional destination marketing organization comprised of leading tourism entities from Oxnard to Santa Cruz that sees funding from the California Travel and Tourism Commission. Charlie Yates, CCTC Chairman, was present to extend support and further articulate the California Space Center project's concept as a state-wide attraction that will garner national and international tourism attention.
The premier highlight of the California Space Center Community Support Meeting in Pismo Beach was the presentation of a $10,000 check from The Boeing Corporation. Brad Lenz, Senior Management/Business Management of Delta Launch Services at The Boeing Corporation was on hand to present the funds as well as address the group on Boeing's support of the California Space Center project.
The California Space Authority would like to express its gratitude to the City of Pismo Beach and Mayor Mary Ann Reiss for providing the venue and warm Pismo Beach hospitality. Mayor Reiss began the day by welcoming the group and sharing some positive thoughts on the California Space Center project.
